Standing on the banks of the Dnipro, Kiev is a fascinating city, easy to navigate to explore with an excellent Metro system making getting to all the sight a simple task. Food here is cheap and the quality is good and the city has a lively bar and club scene for those that like a later night.
You’ll stay 2 or 3 nights in a central 4* Hotel in Kiev on a room only basis.
Whilst in Kiev you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city but the highlight will surely be the all day trip to Chernobyl.
On the 26th April 1986 the world held its breath as reactor number 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded leading to one of the worst Nuclear accidents of all time, the area around the Power Plant was turned into a ghost town and now you’ll take a tour of the exclusion zone to see the fall out from this fascinating area caused by the shocking accident.
On the morning of your choice, you’ll meet your tour guide for an 8am start to the Chernobyl zone of exclusive, about a 2 hour drive from Kiev. On arrival at the Dityatky checkpoint which marks the 30km start of the exclusion zone you’ll enter the exclusion zone and head towards the town of Chernobyl, once an ordinary rural town, home to the plant workers, here you’ll stop at the start of the town by the sign before heading to the museum to see the exhibition of robots & techniques used in the disaster.
We’ll then head to check point Liviv which is the 10km exclusion marker and then onwards to the almost totally buried village of Kopachi, here you’ll visit the kindergarten, one of the last remaining buildings. You’ll stop for photos near to the huge unfinished cooling towers 5 & 6 and you’ll see the 1, 2 & 3 power units of the nuclear power plant.
Visit the memorial close to the administration building, then you’ll have the chance to feed the giant catfish in the cooling pond before the highlight, the viewing point for the Arch, The Sarcophagus and the New Safe Confinement ("Arch").
You’ll then stop for lunch at the cafeteria before heading to the abandoned city of Pripyat, once populated by 50,000 people. Here you’ll get to see the central square, the Energetic palace of culture, the hotel Polesse, a correction point for helicopters dropping lead bags over the 4th reactor ruins. Witness the iconic Ferris wheel in the amusement park & see the Prometey Cinema plus the swimming pool before heading to the port.
Then get to see the secret Soviet Duga-1 radar station, the Russian Woodpecker and the secret town of Chernobyl 2 which provided the efficiency of antennas & horizon tracking of Ballistic missiles. You’ll then head back to the Radiological control centre before heading back to Kiev.
